Aesthetic gum lift, otherwise known as gum reshaping, is a procedure carried out to rectify uneven gums and receding gums. Aesthetic gum lifts are conducted for medical and cosmetic reasons.

An aesthetic gum lift can help strengthen your teeth, and it will greatly improve your appearance. The layout of your gums counts for a lot in the way your smile appears. Some people have their gums covering a better part of their teeth, which results in what is commonly referred to as a “gummy smile.” This too, can be rectified through an aesthetic gum lift.

How is a Gum Lift Done?


Receding gums can be caused by various dental conditions. Tooth decay, gingival infections, tooth loss, and periodontal disease are some of the conditions that are likely to cause uneven or receding gums. Some people are also born with uneven gums.

Before any gum lifting or reshaping is done, these conditions must be treated. All the infections and bacteria present must be eliminated first to ensure the problem does not reoccur after the gum lift has been carried out.

Our aesthetic gum lift procedures are not carried out by just any dentist. They are carried out by specialized periodontists. Local anesthesia is first administered to ensure you don’t experience any pain or discomfort.

Laser Technology


Our periodontist will then use a laser gun to eliminate the hollows holding the bacteria that causes receding gums. The periodontist might need to push up the gum tissues to ensure your teeth are well covered. Either way, when the hollows and bacteria are eliminated, the gums will grow back into place.

In the case of a gummy smile, our periodontist uses the laser gun to etch away the excess gum tissue and expose more of the tooth. They will perfectly contour the gums to ensure they are even and look attractive. The soft tissue laser used helps prevent bleeding during the procedure.

You might experience some slight discomfort after the procedure. There might be slight swelling, although it should subside within a short while. If the discomfort or swelling starts getting out of hand, you should come back to our clinic and get checked.

You should continue practicing proper dental hygiene after the procedure to ensure you do not experience the same problem again. You should be gentle on the gums when brushing and flossing while the gums heal. Rough brushing might irritate the soft gum tissues and cause them to start bleeding.

An aesthetic gum lift procedure can be carried out as a standalone procedure if you only have a problem with your gums, or be carried out in conjunction with other procedures as part of a smile makeover. You do not have to settle for a gummy or unattractive smile while there is a solution for it.
