Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative that is administered through a nose mask during treatment. It is a colorless, odorless gas that gives you a mildly euphoric feeling as you breathe it in. This method of sedation has been used in dentistry for many years, and has proven to be quite effective. A benefit of using nitrous oxide is that there are no residual effects that prevent you from driving yourself home when your treatment is finished.
Some patients prefer to take an oral sedative before their appointment. Oral sedatives give a deep sense of relaxation without putting you completely to sleep. If an oral sedative is the sedation method you choose, we strongly recommend that someone else drive you to and from your appointment.
IV sedation will allow you to sleep throughout the treatment process. This sedation method is especially useful for patients who need extensive treatment that may take quite a bit of time. Some patients prefer to be put to sleep and have as much of their treatment completed in one visit as possible. After the treatment, you will still be quite drowsy, and we strongly recommend that someone take you home to rest.
